On September 29, we got the family together to celebrate Carla’s birthday at Mr Kebab on West Ave. Carla came with her husband Mikko and their three kids, Lola, Bebu and Ottoman. Mama Tessa and Papa Claro were there, and so were Gelo and Gelay.
A room of our own
We booked a function room, so we had the whole space to ourselves. It had red brick walls, white arched alcoves and hanging lanterns that gave off a warm green and amber glow. The long tables were set with bright pink cloths and black runners, which made the room feel like a party the moment we walked in.
A colorful “Happy Birthday” banner hung across one of the arches. On the TV at the far end, a birthday video played, and everyone turned their chairs to watch it. A few of us had our phones up to record it too.
Dinner at the long table
The table filled up fast. There were plates of flatbread to share, bowls and plates of food all down the table, plus drinks for everyone.
When it was time for dessert, two cakes came out: one white and one chocolate with a candle on top.
The photo moment
Of course, there were plenty of photos. Carla and Mikko stood in front of the birthday banner with the kids. Carla held Ottoman, Mikko held up Bebu for the camera, and Lola stood in front in a pink floral dress, holding a lollipop. Around them, everyone had their phones out at the same time, all trying to get the same shot.

It was a simple night: good food, one long table and the whole family in one room. Happy birthday, Carla!
